I never suggested breaking the cycle by doing nothing. I suggest that people in disagreement, first of all, listen actively to each other and try to see the other POV. Usually there is at least some shred of legitimacy there. The parties should each understand that they are both hyperventilating and make an honest effort to quit it, and to tentatively trust each other enough to be able to call each other on what is hyperventilation and what is not. Then they should try to find some change that will meet both sets of legitimate interests.

Of course, to do that you have to want to solve the problem rather than stir up the conflict either for your own amusement or because you think in the end you will get a win-lose and you don't care how much damage you do in the process or simply because you're incompetent at solving problems.
