JDN, it's a good idea in theory. The problem is that there are huge language, culture and trust issues. The same issues that are driving an increasingly bigger wedge between us and those Iraqis that might have been more cooperative. I know that if someone came to our country and took over with guns, didn't speak our language and could order me around, search my house and had roughed up or killed people I knew, I would be one of the ones that took matters into my own hands or, at the very least, supported those that did.

We got rid of Saddam and most were grateful but that gratitude doesn't give us a free pass now. We needed to convince the Iraqis that we were acting in their best interest by ACTUALLY ACTING IN THEIR BEST INTERESTS. They have seen what we've prioritized and where our efforts have gone. Why would the Iraqis who are living under occupation think that we're there for the good of the average Iraqi? Many Americans aren't even convinced of our "good" intentions on behalf of the Iraqi people.

The ACTIONS of the Bush people consistently indicate that our goals are far more hidden and, as time passes, the situation seems to be evolving in a direction leading to a Russia-Afghanistan type of conflict rife with ambushes and the primary weapons being small arms, rpgs and bombs. Let's just hope that no one arms them with stinger missiles and that we take a long look at how successful the "Americanization" of Iraq is likely to be and get out before we dig ourselves a deep hole with the lives of our soldiers.
