If you could just get your head around the notion that there is a problem with CERTAIN religious symbols that have a lot of baggage rather than assuming that this is a total assault, you might be able to see the humanity of your opponents

I designate you as my official spokesperson. I seem to agree with everything you say.
I have to go tooooo- WORK.

No one is denying anyone's humanity, btw...

But it's a nice rhetorical flourish. <g>

I think you underestimate or misinterpret the motives of at least some of the opponents. In fact, there are some, maybe not all but some and perhaps many, who object to ANY religious symbols in public live. There are still, for example, people who are exercised about having to use coins with the motto "In God we Trust" embossed on them. I once met a man who took every coin and ran it through a grinder to grind that motto off before he would spend it. He did this until the Secret Service caught up with him and threatened to toss him in jail if he didn't quit. He quit -- guess his principles weren't all THAT strong. But still . . .

You get more votes that way.
Funny. The EXACT same thought occurred to me.

"This boy is running for governor."
