Well, we have another point of disagreement.

I think the origin of principles is important. Laws don't just happen. They come from somewhere for some reason. They were proposed by some human being to enforce some principle that person believed in, and unless you are living in a dictatorship are voted on and approved by some number of other human beings because the proposed laws conform to some set of principles those human beings believe in.

Part of legal practice is understanding where laws come from and why, not just thinking they fell out of the sky like a block of granite with the laws inscribed on them.

You've been around government long enough to know that underlying policy is important in interpreting laws and regulations. That's just as true in enforcing criminal laws as it is in enforcing environmental regulations.
