The flag of the Southern States is not a part of our moral or legal heritage, it is the flag of a short- lived insurrection against the United States. We were foolish to have tolerated it for so long. It is not in any manner comparable to the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments are just as much a part of our common heritage, regardless of religious affiliation or non- affiliation, as the Magna Carta, yet no one would make an issue of representing it, on the grounds that it secured English liberties which were later the cultural basis of our own claims against the Crown. At this point, the religious provenance is incidental.......
