The flag symbolized the aspirations of participants in a conflict so vast and deep that it almost destroyed our republic. It is not merely "the flag of a short- lived insurrection against the United States". I know part of your argumentation style is to assume as fact what you cannot prove, but this claim is just silly.

And the religious provenance is NOT indcidental merely because you SAY it is. It is obviously very central, critical even- which is why Christians moan and groan about how persecuted they are because they can't have their religious symbols enshrined in governmental facilities. They want them enshrined because of their religious symbolism- not for any other reason. In other words, Christians want entanglement between their religion and the state- and where custom has allowed them that unfair advantage, they do not want to give it up. People with an unfair advantage never want to give it up, and they always try for other reasons to justify their advantage- but the reality is obvious.
