Don,

International A.N.S.W.E.R. was well covered by C-SPAN during the pre-war demonstrations. My impression is that they are much more oriented toward the issues of minorities than toward mainstream progressive/populist issues.

That's why I prefer the message of folks like Arianna Huffington, Jim Hightower, Molly Ivins and Bob Scheer, for a representative handful.

Today, The Pretender To The Throne was in Portland, OR, and collected over $1 MM from the fat cats. Dubya didn't have the gall to serve hot dogs, nachos and beer like he did in NYC. The news reporter made a special point of telling us that it was wild chinook salmon salad that was served. <g>

In the meantime, the City of Portland fielded about 400 police outfitted in riot gear. At a cost to the taxpayer of over $200,000. The Gross Hypocrisy Party representative on the news scoffed at the idea that Bush should pay for this cost. Arguing that Portland should feel "honored" to have the world's biggest liar show up for a bribery haul. The 4,000 people who were harassed by the police for expressing their right to speak and assemble felt otherwise about this abuse of power.

True, groups like ANSWER get caught up in off-topic things like Mumia that distract them from their main purpose of bring social justice to our economic system. But, perhaps their main purpose is really like any other organization, to survive. Therefore, they latch on to issues that are popular and can help them gain members and donations.

BTW, there are certainly innocent people on death row, whether Mumia is one of them, I haven't determined. But, the Philadelphia police in the 1970s were some of the brutalist and most corrupt in the country under Mayor Frank Rizzo. I'm sure more than one person is/was in jail on false murder charges due to their corruption.
