right, i read that. i also showed you which ones are enabled on my winxp machine...

"tell me which of these two settings have check marks...

enable install on demand (internet explorer)
enable install on demand (other)

on my winxp settings, the first is not checked and the second is"

if you want to try that setting, have at it

i'm grasping at straws here. i think yours is an intriguing problem. i don't know why you are not given the option to open the program and run it, only save it to disk.

i wish others here would proffer their suggestions.

i gave you mine

i doubt that those browser settings i wondered about will have any impact on your situation, so don't pay them much mind... other than trying them the way i suggested and telling me if there was any difference in seeing the Open option displayed on the file download dialog.

if no change, easy to put those browser settings back like they were or in any other configuration you wish.

i've actually started reading a microsoft kb article on those two settings that, like most ms kb articles, appears to be written in some other language.

support.microsoft.com

on your contention that you are not seeing an Open option being displayed on the File Download dialog....

are you logged in as administrator when this happens? it's possible that Open is solely an admin privilege.

let me know

another thing for you to check on....

*********************************
"When you click a link to download a Tagged Information File Format (TIFF) image from a Web site, the Open button in the File Download dialog box may be unavailable (dimmed).

The problem occurs if you have version 6.0.2713.1500 (or later) of the Shdocvw.dll file installed."
*********************************

so search for Shdocvw.dll and tell me what version num it is....

bottom line on this issue (above), is to install the most recent ie6.0 service pack
