Storms and Chickens”

I have this image of a 19th century steam locomotive, with parlor cars in tow, leaving Texas in 2000, and arriving in Washington, in January 2001. In the parlor cars are those who could afford a ticket. The oil interests have their car with their “Alaska, Here We Come” banner, right behind Ken Lay’s Energy Purveyors’ (a.k.a. Energy Prevaricators) car. There are of course the Big Pharma Car, the Good Hands Insurance car, the We’re Right Because God Told Us car, and the “Just Plain Ole Rich Folks” car. But there is no MIC (Military Industrial Complex) car. That’s because the MIC is in the locomotive – driving the train.

In a brief, and admittedly somewhat flip, post yesterday, I said the Bush Admin had no ideas, only an agenda. Each of those “parlor cars” has it’s own agenda “paragraph” that it expects to be implemented - after all they paid handsomely. For the most part, their “employees” have delivered. For example, consider those Rich Folks. During the campaign with a booming economy, and budget surplus, we “obviously” needed a severe tax cut that would shift wealth to the rich. With inauguration, and an economy experiencing a “whoosh” down the toilet, we “obviously” needed the same tax cut.

The MIC neo-cons being “pencil pushers” well documented their “Full MIC Employment” agenda, and they wasted no time in implementing it, when 9-11 gave them an opportunity. Effort has been made to blur church-state lines, insurance rates have skyrocketed, and drug companies have thrived. Just like any check list, the agenda has been methodically addressed.

The problem is actions have consequences. After generational market bubbles burst, you have secular bear markets. So no one should blame Bush for what was inevitable. But Washington policies can make a difference. They can exaggerate or mitigate the misery of a recession. Wrapped as part of a job creating economic stimulus, the tax cuts haven’t delivered. Moreover, the neo-con dream in Iraq, daily becomes more nightmarish.

While an essay needs a peg from which to hang, I have a problem with the “Perfect Storm”. No one is responsible for a storm. Many of this Admin’s problems are of their own making. They come directly from their agenda. I suspect each culture has it’s own aphorism about this common human condition. In America, we talk about “chickens coming home to roost”.

Bush is directly responsible for the murder of the UN representatives in Iraq.

That fact alone is HORRIFYING. It is unspeakably tragic.

These wonderful peace advocates -- these diplomats -- these truly decent people -- died at Bush's hand.
