And when you way "someone does something to you that is generally considered an insult, something Miss Manners considers an insult, then it is an insult," you are also saying that I may say something that I intend as a insult and you perceive as an insult but Miss Manners wouldn't recognize it as such, so it's not an insult.

Seems to me that context is important. For example, in the book X cited recently, for a white person to say "nigger" to a black person would probably be perceived by most people as an insult. But for a black person to say it to another black person, nowadays it's not necessarily taken as an insult. So the context is important, and how the people involved take it is important. Which is what I've been saying all along.
