Thing that I could never understand about the Columbia disaster was that NASA was actually in the process of asking the Air Force to turn its telescope on the shuttle, but then stopped the request. If they had seen that the shuttle was badly damaged, they might have been able to do something, such as move the astronauts onto the space station until they could get a rescue vehicle up.
