"So, if I consider that post to be an insult, then you have insulted me?"

Yes. Because if you (genuinely) consider it an insult, it means that you have been offended. In which case, I am left with some choices. It is not an automatic conclusion that I am at fault.

If you want to define "insult" only as an intended deliverable that has successfully been completed, then you may...as a term that carries this meaning for you but not others. I disagree with this use of the term for myself but clearly, I and others are talking about something else...what would you like to label that, so that we may proceed?

Ah, you must have added those last two paragraphs after I read the original post. Either that, or I got in too big of a hurry to respond to the first part.

So you say something that is unkind, but you do it in such a way that I can't possibly incurr harm from it. It is in an unknown language and you have a smile on your face. Or, you use tricky language so that I am apt to misinterpret your meaning as a compliment.

Obviously, I would not likely feel harm done (insult) on my person. So, is it an insult at all? Miss Manners (society) may very well take exception to your behavior and take it as an insult (harm to humanity). There could possibly be a third category in which no one but you understands the nature of your behavior...you said unkind things to or about me but no one but you has privvy to the situation. Have I been harmed?...I don't see how. Has miss manners (society) been insulted...Only to the extent that you are a member of society and have a conscience.
