Here's something interesting. I wonder what caused this.

Math SAT scores reach 36-year high
cnn.com

The amazing thing is that I suspect a larger % of the population takes SATs than in 1967. So you would expect a drag on scores since about 1975 due to this. When I was in high school (70s/80s), math skills were *horrible*.

How about grammar? I learned the proper conjugation of the verb "to be" in about the third grade. What chance do you have, college education or not, if you can't communicate effectively?

People forget that in the old days, there weren't much to learn

This should be written: People forget that, in the old days, there was not (or wasn't) much to learn.

It was a statement that was both funny and false even without the grammar mistake.

And yes, advanced calculus was on the menu when I was in high school. It was the kind of thing we discussed at my dinner table because my father was something of a self taught math genius.

What leads me to believe that educational standards are slipping in US schools has more to do with the poor reading comprehension and writing skills exhibited by the 20 year olds coming to me for a job with college degrees. You don’t even want to be in the room when I try to explain simple ratios to a 25 year old employee; it is embarrassing in the extreme. Please just go up to one of your same generation friends and ask them the significance of the Magna Carta. Ask them to give you a working definition of “electrical current”. Ask them who was Cecil Rhodes or who succeeded Henry II or ask how many cabinet members there are or get them to name the branches of government (that’s always good for laughs). If you doubt public school education is slipping just watch Jay Leno when he does those Jay Walking segments. It is horrifying. I was at a Columbus Day celebration when an 18 year old kid came up to me and said, “That cat Columbus, what he do?”

I don't know where you got the myth that we could all get good jobs without college. I graduated from college and so did most of my siblings and friends. The ones who tried to get away with just high school found themselves going to night school or going back to school full time. The Boomers are over-educated. I know a good many people of my generation with graduate, post graduate degrees and post doctorate studies. I know very few my own age without a college degree with the exception of my husband. But then, he would have gotten a great chuckle at your answer to me because while he isn't college educated, he remembers everything he learned in grammar school.
