C2, you have stated the battle more accurately. But you do assume that the USA culture is going to succeed because it's better.

Pinocchio was deceived into going to Pleasure Island along with the other naughty boys and grew long ears, turning into a donkey. Nihilistic materialism, J Lo's bum, booze, action movies and cocaine isn't necessarily the nirvana that people around the world aspire to.

I'm not at all certain that those cultural attributes are closely attached to the great success of the USA. Irwin Jacobs, Andrew Viterbi, Klein Gilhousen, Roberto Padovani, Bill Gardner, Rich Kerr, $ill Gates, Benjamin Franklin, Carl Barks, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Albert Einstein, willing employees, decent mothers, capital accumulation and Uncle Al KBE have more to do with the success than the long-nosed Pinocchio and donkeys of Pleasure Island.

The vaunted freedom in the USA is circumscribed. The values dodgy. The beliefs questionable. The Prozac and Ritalin prolific. Here's Fred on self-belief and religion fredoneverything.net
