So, do you agree that the improved test scores are a red herring?

I have to admit, it is kindof disheartening to post good news like that and have a bunch of immediate responses that the result was erroneous in some way.

Lets put it this way- those improved test score numbers were certainly not BAD news.

Personally I think teacher quality is good these days. I have one complaint about public schools in CA where I agree with conservatives- there is an underlying focus on 1) underachievers and 2) underachieving aspects of good students. In other words I think public schools spend too much time trying to elevate every student to a basic proficiency level in every subject when my view would be to focus on every students BEST subject and try to encourage that. As an example the kids in my family spend an outrageous amount of time worried about how they will fare in phys ed. This is a waste of time, I come from a family of uncoordinated couch potatoes. What they should be worried about is how to compete against the best math students in the school, or something. That is just an example. Anyway that is my only complaint about CA schools at least, other than the facilities and class size which is obviously too large.
