My opinion of all this is a little longer term, and I feel that this radical Islam or any other religious extremism has simply no future going forward this century. The process is going to be as ineluctable as the way paganism was swept from Europe by the church over the course of the middle ages, and the way the church was subsequently replaced by the rational certitude of modern science as the real driving force of human progress. It is not going to matter what we specifically do, these towel heads are doomed long term. Radical Islam is only at the forefront right now because the epicenter of that religion is sitting on some 2/3 of the worlds oil resources. Without that, the US and the rest of the world would have done none of the harmful meddling in the region that's taken place during the latter part of the 20'th century, and the region would simply be irrelevant, the way a lot of Africa appears to be. Meddling here, a little attempted nation building there... it's like these guys that constantly traded in and out all the time, when simply holding longer term trades would have more than sufficed to profit well on the ride up and then down during the boom bust cycle we experienced. The sad fact is that mideast Islam has not recently contributed to what is really shaping the world as it is today and what it will be tomorrow. This is their fundamental problem, not the existence of Israel or American troops in Saudi Arabia. Asia is catching the wave of progress, and democracy will gradually take hold there over the long term. And the US will continue to innovate. This talk of how the US is washed up is like the guys who used to say "why not close the US patent office, everything has been invented". Nonsense. Nor will nuclear weapons do these guys squat. If nuclear weapons were economically important, Russia would still be a world economic power, with prosperity for all in the nation. Soviet empire citizens have never experienced general comfortable prosperity compared to the open societies in the west, and now the country is a basket case. A lot of good all those missiles they have has done for them. In the shorter term, this slum clearance in Iraq will probably be for the good overall, but we can't really make anybody accept democracy if it isn't in their culture. Sooner or later we'll have to get out of their way and let them do what they want with their nation, and if another Saddam doesn't rise to power that may be the best that can practically be hoped for.
