Either the meaning of life is strictly materialistic, (what I can get to make me feel good while on the planet) or it has deeper meaning. The deeper meaning is always going to transend materialism. In the absense of one you are left with the other. Always has been, always will be. To simply say it is "misdirected" leaves a gap, making the default appear to be "materialism." ...a bite-o-the-apple.
