<<It remains to be seen if the Democrats are going to run a me-to Republican-Lite candidate, or a real peace candidate ( = promises a quick handover to UN and then Iraqis, and a rapid exit of US soldiers from Iraq)>>>

With Al Qaeda promising terrorist strikes on the US . any success will doom a peace candiadte.

<<<Clearly, some of them (like Graham and Gephardt and Clark) are Republican-Lite. Others, like Dean, haven't yet made up their mind, imo. It's also difficult to separate rhetoric from reality, for everyone running. After all, Bush ran in 2000, and governed until 9/11, as a semi-isolationist, who was going to leave foreign affairs almost entirely to his well-respected Sec. of State, and concentrate almost entirely on his domestic agenda. Any Democrat could also deliver something far different than what he promised when running for office.>>>

A Preident responds to whatever develops that is of importance to the Nation. The domestic situation was the immediate problem, until 911 proved isolationist thinking would not work.
So as you note, campaign promises may prove unworkable, and todays Democratic promises may sink the ship
when it comes time to vote.
Its a tough road and a Democratic candidate will have to avoid specifics, as the foreign and domestic political scenes are changing rapidly.
He cannot be too Green,.for example.
1. If oil suppplies get short, or the ME effort fails, we may need nuclear power or new Alaska drilling
2. He cannot be too peaceful, as indications are we need a solid Military with unrest in the World.and especially if we get another 911.
3.He cannot promise to cut taxes- thats already been done
4. He cannot promise to raise taxes as that would kill the recovery and and cause a taxpayer revolt
5. He should know by now that messing with Social Security and Veterans pensions( or anybodies pension )
is a big no-no.
IMO he (or she) will have to be slicker than Slick Willie, and probably your Republican- Lite candidate would have the best chance.
