Berlin insists on non military involvement in Iraq

¡¡¡¡BERLIN, Sept. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- The German government reiterated Wednesday that the country will not be involved in any military mission in Iraq despite Washington's request for help from other countries.

¡¡¡¡"The German position (of no military involvement in Iraq) has not changed", an anonymous government official told DPA, the German press agency.

¡¡¡¡According to US press reports, the Bush administration is discussing with other members of the UN Security Council for a possible resolution in which the international community will contribute troops to Iraq under the US command and in return play a larger role in the Iraqi political process.

¡¡¡¡Meanwhile, Gernot Erler, foreign policy spokesman of the rulingSocial Democratic Party, said the US plan is still far apart from the European view which believes that UN should assume leadership in Iraq's post-war reconstruction.

¡¡¡¡Erler said even if the security council adopted a resolution paving the way for more countries to be militarily involved in Iraq, it would have no effect on Germany.

¡¡¡¡"We believe that the concentration of all force materials in Iraq would be a quite dangerous development ", and instead, the German defense force should focus on such "neuralgic points" as Afghanistan, he added. Enditem
