"This is the part I wasn't quite clear on:

'you will then have to put the IP of each computer in your network into the za trusted zone. it'll be the numbers like 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101'

Is there some kind of a settings section of ZA that I do that in?"

yes under firewall | zones

za has very good tutorials and help feature that diagrams and explains this better than me. i mainly wanted to let you know that

once you get the program successfully installed

in order for one pc to see the other, you will have to put them both in the trusted zone

based on your posts so far, pat (being unable to install za), i'd say that your network needs to be shut down in order for you to install properly and safely. it sounds like za isn't clear on what machine you are installing it on...

"Setup is unable to shutdown TrueVector service. Please use the service manager to shut down TrueVector service and then restart the installer."

if you've had za on the target pc before, that might explain it. and even if you didn't, after a number of attempts to install it, there may be bits of the program on there now.

i'll reiterate the need to remove all traces first, and you should check running processes to see if vsmon.exe (true vector service) is present. i'd be surprised if it is, but you should check, based on the error message.

in addition to the firewall install issue, i'll suggest that you look at your new Linksys router configuration and change the password. out of the box, the password is something universally known... admin.

you don't want that hanging around too long.

>>"BEFSR41 users have nothing to worry about if they have a good strong password <snip>, and as long as they have not changed the factory default settings for remote administration. in addition, checking the default setting for blocking WAN requests is advisable, per the linksys response.

i was relieved to confirm that my settings are correcto, and one of the very first things i did when i configured the router way back when was to put a strong password in place. if i'm not mistaken, linksys supports up to 64 characters for the password. i ran out of imagination after 32 characters.<<" #reply-18217128
