Never been to KKD but both KKA and DD would go broke if they depended on me for doughnut sales. DD coffee is good but my local breakfast place makes better tasting coffee than any doughnut place I've been in. Not big on the fancy stuff in the morning. Just want a good tasting cup of regular coffee.

The story (link) was dead on in one respect. DD has really cleaned up there act (housekeeping). All stores are spotless. Most all have drive through as well.

It's one thing to bash me. That's fine.

It's a whole different ballgame if you start messing with my donuts.

There is only one donut -- a KKD.

Hi Michal,

While the article you linked to was largely about the Dunkin' Doughnuts versus Krispy Kreme battle, there is yet another upstart player on the doughnut gridiron, Tim Horton's.

TH is out of Canada, and has every bit of the fanatical loyal following that KKD lays claim to.

In head-to-head-to-head "competitions", KKD beat out TH and DD, but in fairness, the "competitions" were in KKD country. I suspect that any "competitions" held in Canada or perhaps in Boston might have entirely differing results.

I have tasted KKD many times, and DD many times more than that, and I prefer KKD. I've never had the luxury of tasting TH, but know of people who swear by TH. I think that whichever doughnut is perceived as "best" will ultimately come down to personal preferences. They all taste good, they all go good with a nice hot coffee, and they'll all keep the cardiologists fully employed for years to come...

BTW, Tim Horton's is also expanding in North America, so it shouldn't be too long before we can conduct our own taste tests wherever we may live...

KJC

Report: Krispy Kreme New-Store Sales Weak
Tuesday September 16, 5:45 am ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Sales at some newer stores of doughnut chain Krispy Kreme (NYSE:KKD - News) are unexpectedly weak, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing internal company figures.

The figures showed that average sales at about 40 stores opened between Sept. 2002 and April 2003 were about $35,000 per week in the 13-week period ended Aug. 4. That's less than what the company says is normal for its newer stores, and less than some investors might expect, said the paper.

In addition, people who have examined the books of Krispy Kreme's biggest franchisee, Great Circle Family Foods LLC, say Great Circle's same-store sales, including wholesale shipments, dropped 10 percent in its most recent quarter, the Journal reported.

A Great Circle spokesman told the Journal that comparable-store results were "not meaningful" since they don't reflect normal sales declines at maturing stores, while Krispy Kreme's chief operating officer said the data show only a "limited set of data points."

Krispy Kreme and Great Circle representatives were not immediately available to comment to Reuters.

Krispy Kreme shares closed up 67 cents at $42.70 in trading on Monday.
