I'm waiting impatiently for Systemworks 2004 to release. Should it not be available by 9/20 I'll enable my backup AV from VCOM Systems Suite 5 (formerly OnTrack Systems Suite 4) and substitute it for the Norton AV component of Systemworks 2003 till Systemworks 2004 is available. I suspect there will not be too much lapse, but I probably would have been more astute if I hadn't upgraded Systemworks 2002 to 2004 the day it released because I had a few months to run on my previous free Systemworks subscription. Essentially VCOM Systems Suite 5 is my utilities backup/alternative to Systemworks, and bundles a great set of comparable utilities to Norton's and I've used their bundled firewall (by Sygate) which I really like for several years, and it tests very well. At $59.95 Systems Suite 5 ships with VCOM's PowerDesk 5 (available as freeware) which simply stated is the best and most powerful file manager out there other than its for pay big brother. I use the $39.95 PowerDesk Pro 5 which has a very tolerable FTP client bundled with it that I use for 90% of my FTP requirements. Currently I schedule 2 full AV systems scans a week in the very early AM with Systemsworks Norton AV (protected in the interim by Auto-Protect), and one with SystemSuite 5 which I do not run concurrently in the background. If I have to rely on System Suite 5's defs before Systemsworks updates I'll use VCOM's background equivalents in that interim period. While Norton's LU runs transparently in the background (with my options settings) VCOM's "Easy Update" simply notifies that new defs are available. and a few manual clicks start an automatic download and installation process. I use Systemworks defragmentor exclusively and I schedule the C drive once per week, and the other 5 logical drives once monthly, but SystemSuite 5 has a very good defragmentor (Jet) also. I use registry tools from both and an occassional tool from System Suite that isn't available in Systemsworks. AS you might remember I'm a Norton Symantec fan from way back (and a CentralPoint PCTools fan before that dating to mid-eighties) but I like what I've seen from OnTrack (now VCOM) and their Systems Suite is an attractive bundle. v-com.com If I could only choose one utility bundle with AV, I'd undoubtedly take Systemworks, but I choose to choose 2. <g> Best, - Eric -
