HSINCHU, Taiwan -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. said Tuesday (September 9, 2003) that net sales for August 2003 totaled NT$18,317 million (about US$535 million), reaching a record high.

August 2003 net sales increased 3.8 percent from July 2003 sales and were up 35.2 percent compared with the same month in 2002, the company said.

Revenues for January through August 2003 totaled NT$125.2 billion million (about US$3.66 billion), an increase of 17.0 percent over the same period in 2002.

TSMC's bumper August has reversed trend of the sequentially down July figures (see August 7 story) and lifted the year-to-date growth up from 14.3 percent in July to 17.0 percent at the end of August, indicating gathering momentum in semiconductor chip sales.

TSMC's August 2003 sales revenues increased as a result of higher wafer shipments compared to July 2003, according to TSMC spokesperson Lora Ho. TSMC recently said that third quarter wafer shipments would be higher than previous guidance (see September 5 story).
