On what basis do you oppose a policy whereby pilots would carry pistols?

First, let me apologize........I thought I was posting to someone else. I thought they were linking me to an article and not another thread.

As for the issue at hand, I am concerned about pilots having guns for a number of reasons. We are assuming that all pilots are sane, rational people........that is not always the case; to whit, the Egyptian pilot who suicided his plane a few years back, or last year, the two AWA pilots who were badly trashed on alcohol but planned to fly their passenger jet in any case.

In addition, accidents happen......esp. when guns are around. And accidents in the air tend to have a much more disastrous effect.

I would prefer to have the cockpits sufficiently secured so that it would take a small army to get into the cockpit......it can be done. Terrorists don't want to work that hard at commandering a plane........the pre flight efforts are enough. Knowing that cockpits are well secured should provide sufficient deterrent.
