I have never met liberals who don't know that the USSR, and China, backed some rather unpleasant leaders.

The French left wing is one good example of such. From my experience living there, I am convinced it's some kind of cultural thing, because no communist party ever took hold here, and wouldn't have despite excesses like McCarthy. Americans rightly mistrust the very idea of communism, whereas the French almost have some kind of love affair with the whole collective idea - it shows in their tolerance of labor unions for example.

I insist on the fact that these things are deeply seated in the ambient culture, and it's as delusional to hope the French will come around to our way of thinking as it is for them to dream of the USA turning into some kind of Socialist Europe, or that we can "nation build" democratic governments in Arab countries.
