Hey, if you guys didn't play quite so much hockey you wouldn't need all that dental work. What I can't understand is why is it that the Brits have such terrible teeth even though they have national health?

BTW if you are non working poor in this country your health care is covered by Medicaid. It's the working class and lower middle class that have a hard time getting medical benefits. I never understood why they simply don't get their medical insurance independently like I did. My self-employed plan covers myself and my husband costs $4k a year, $3k a year when you consider half is deductible. $1500/year per person is hardly a sum that would put someone who makes 20-35k in the poor house. It comes down to priorities. Frequently you see people who have $150/month cable bills, spend $150 month on cigarettes and alcohol, have new car payments but no health insurance. If you ask them why, they tell you that the asshole they work for is too cheap to "give" them health insurance.

I once had an employee that I shared with a partner. We didn't want the nightmare of insuring her in that situation, so we told her we'd pay her the dollar difference and she could get her own insurance. Now this was a woman who was in her late 40s so she was at an age where this was a serious consideration. Do you think she took that money and used it for health insurance? After she left us, she took a job that paid less but had health benefits. It's as if she needed the psychological trick of thinking she wasn't paying for it, that her employer was paying for it. When it looked like it was her money she didn't think it was worth it.

Earlie, those doctors were great guys, but it's too bad they have to volunteer in order to provide kids with basic health care.
