I enjoyed your post on culture in Italy, and your family's adaptation to it. The week I spent in Rome in '55 will never be forgotten. A much earthier culture.

Are you still making the rounds of the Balkans?

John, culture and economics absolutely played a part in the death toll in Europe's heat wave.

Oh, I don't doubt that at all. But if you wish to invoke something at as abstract a level as "socialism" as responsible for heat related deaths, that takes a lot of links down to demonstrate causal links with the deaths. At the level that article invoked it, it was only using right wing politics to take advantage of the deaths of a great many people. I find that, at best, objectionable.
