None could come up with a scenario that said Gore had won the state. BBC's Newsnight, with reporter Greg Palast, did come up with a scenario whereby the election was stolen, albeit the 'hanging chads' red herring played no role in the reporting. This was the infamous issue of Jeb Bush, Katherine Harris and a contractor called ChoicePoint colluding the strip voting rights from upwards of 60,000 Florida voters. The British were perfectly well aware of this in early December, 2000. The American mainstream media still hasn't reported on this travesty. The reason the public is so ill-informed is because the media wants it so. And the Administration and the major media corporations are deeply involved in a conspiracy to destroy our democracy. Another Florida folly? There was the demented design of the West Palm Beach county ballots that had hundreds of Holocaust survivors voting for America's favorite Nazi, Pat Buchanan. As you might recall, the actual news of the independent vote re-counts by the likes of the Miami Herald came out in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy of 9/11. And were conveniently buried on the inside pages of the few papers that reported on the results. This collusion between the media and the Administration is typical. Much like they try to sneak-announce unpopular rulings and regulation changes on late Friday afternoons, especially before holiday weekends. (Recall the timing of announcements on gimmes to the coal utilities, or the mining companies recently.) One thing that is absolutely clear to me is that the Supreme Court acted in a completely illegal fashion when it ended the recount on December 12, 2000. No one needs any more proof that five Republicans stole the election and perpetrated a judicial coup d'etat. There was a perfectly adequate mechanism for settling the 2000 elections. The Supreme Court decided to thwart that legal solution, and impose their own partisan will on the electorate. Re: Neither Gore nor Bush was a candidate I could get enthused about. But now we are stuck with a menace instead of just mediocrity. I concur about the candidates. As Jim Hightwower so wisely puts it, "if the gods had wanted us to vote, they'd have given us candidates." What I don't agree with is notion that Gore would have been a mediocrity as a President. His patrician style was ill suited for the campaign trail, but he is a seasoned statesman and he was and is vastly more prepared to be a President than the current "C" student that the Republicans foisted on us. FWIW.... -Ray
