I find your speculations interesting, but not very persuasive. Why would they see it as the Pith of their Being? Whether they saw it as morally negative or not, the question is, were they in a more perilous situation with special burdens imposed to overcome it? Would they consider it an evolutionary jump to suddenly have to figure out how to walk with a cane, because they no longer could rely on their legs to manage unaided?
