The guy who sat their and let an entire US embassy be taken hostage and did nothing about it except launch a disasterous failure of a "rescue".

Was it Carter's fault the rescue failed? He was trying to get the people freed. Should he have tried another rescue? There was another plan on his desk.

How about an invasion with 200,000 troops? That would have fared well at the dinner time discussions of post Vietnam war discussions, now wouldn't it have.

If Carter was not working in that post quagmire era, he might have felt more compelled to try another rescue. But he opted for continued diplomacy, which in the end, resulted in their release...to the admittedly more hawkish Reagan administration. Reagan did nothing except get sworn in, and the hostages were released. Kinda makes you wonder what kind of deal making went on...Iran-Contra...comes to mind.

That's part of what I mean by being preceded by bad foreign policy, the same kind that installs the Shah in Iran after a bloody coup.
