The US can offshore every worker we have, run up a trillion dollar deficit, and still be in a position to have the strongest worldwide companies and maybe even highest GDP, due to innovations coming down from DARPA and who knows who else. There are a lot of innovations in the chip area apparently, wish I knew that business as well as I do software. Its just this political situation we have, we just can't seem to fix anything or invest money wisely. I get the impression this jobs exodus blindsided the federal economists when anybody in the trenches could see we were going to be in a world of hurt in the tax rolls, this happened at the state and federal level in terms of deficits from what I can see. sheesh lots of dummies in government big surprise (except smart people at Darpa)... this globalization is something we need to react to, there has been nothing thus far from govt ... right now we have a tax system skewed against US labor, seems like a good idea to remedy that, I doubt government can pull it off.
