Sultan, If you ignore the FLQ, the kidnappings, murder and the Federal Government imposing martial law, rounding up thousands of suspects and putting tanks in the streets of Montreal - I guess you could call it civilized. John

That's not just the civilized solution, it's the only practical solution. It's not just that the Quebec solution allows for maximum human rights. It's that, if Canada defined itself as a Protestant English-speaking nation (in the same way that India has now defined itself as a Hindu nation), and tried to enforce this on Quebec, the result would be permanent civil war, and no amount of authoritarianism (short of ethnic cleansing) could hold it together. "Live and let live" is not idealism; it's a survival value. If Quebec decides to become an independent nation, it really wouldn't change anything important. Quebec would still be in NATO, still be in NAFTA, still have open borders, still be intimately and permanently dependant on Canada and the U.S.
