Help me understand a bit of history in this context : Why were the Nuremberg trials necessary?

They were NOT called to merely deal with low-ranking soldiers (those took place at other lower war crimes trials).

They were called to try THE LEADERSHIP, political and military, who instigated the conflict, and ultimately bore responsibility for the war they waged against neighboring countries and peoples.

The Nuremberg trials were not "necessary" - most wars throughout history haven't ended with similar trials - but the Allies wanted to make a statement about the peculiar and extreme tactics of the Nazi regime.

The Nazis weren't really punished for the war, per se, but for crimes against civilians. Atrocities.

Kind of what is being done against Milosevic.
