"I'm still digging for some insight that might get me there."

That, I would consider, a great next step in this discussion. I could use some insight into that also. Conscientious objectors in combat don't just get a free pass for flipping the peace sign. You must (and should) provide the foundation that warrants such a stand on conscience. Obviously chris's radio blasting girl would not make the cut.

Have any suggestions on where to begin? I thought my masseus had the right stuff, that is why I promoted him as a model.

I can get my head around the notion of freedom of conscience
in that I don't think he can be forced to massage someone his conscience won't
permit him to massage.

can you get your head around the notion that a restaurant owner in Annapolis in 1962 can't be forced to serve someone at his restaurant that his conscience won't permit him to serve? You know as well as I do, having been there at the time, that the absolute moral revulsion of some Southern whites for blacks was far more extreme than much contemporary revulsion against homosexuality. We simply have to make a social decision. Can a business owner select who they will and will not serve in their business based on race, creed, color, sexual orientation, etc., when there is no other rational ground for such discrimination? It's quite a simple question, really.
