Suicide bombing is political Until that woman is persuaded by someone, somehow, that there is a just and meaningful future for her and for her family, there will never be peace. You admit that suicide bombing is political, i.e. organized with a political purpose, and that desperation isn't enough, but keep insisting anyhow that the suicide bombing won't stop until the Palestinians are no longer "desperate". You are contradicting yourself, don't you realize that? If the leaders of the Palestinians became convinced of the inutility of suicide bombing, then by your own admission suicide bombing, being political, would cease. That is not to say that the conflict would necessarily cease. But the chosen tactic of suicide bombing would cease. And it really wouldn't matter all that much how "desperate" the Palestinians felt, desperation being a helpful but not even a necessary (note all the non-desperate bombers), let alone a sufficient, cause for suicide bombing.

But none of this addresses the state of mind of the 20 year old Palestinian woman who reaches under her blouse and detonates herself on a bus The state of mind of the bomber could be dominated by all sorts of things: triumph, despair, rage, glory, and so forth. You are making a very large assumption about the bombers when you ascribe their motivation to despair. In the early 19th century well educated Europeans committed suicide for aesthetic reasons. It was fashionable. In relation to this you might look at the PA's educational curricula and Palestinian popular culture. You might also look at the area's fashionable Perfectly Stupid Ideas. Addressing the state of mind of those who are the instruments of the suicide bombing administrators is in a real sense futile. What is far more important is being clear about the aims and reasoning of those who run the suicide bombing campaign.
