It seems to me that in order to brainwash someone, you would have to prevent them from being exposed to conflicting inputs. That's certainly not a condition that exists in American media. As I recall, the concept of brainwashing was originally associated with prisoners of war.

Now, selling someone a bill of goods, that's a different matter.
