But,for his motivation to be paternalistic, all that matters is that he believes it. Hmmm. Let me pull a Chris Hodgkin. So, if the Nazis believed that the Final Solution was better for the Jews, that's all that mattered? Belief makes it enough? Or, since that example may seriously offend some folks, let's take a somewhat less offensive one. (I can't come up with a totally non offensive one because the whole nature of the concept is offensive.) Suppose that the power structure in the South in the 1960s truly believed that it was better for the Negros that they not mix with the whites, because that would emphasize their inferiority, but that it was better for them that they have their own schools, their own housing areas, etc. Would that have been a sufficient justification for Jim Crow laws?
