<BUT then, what to do the next time another country in the world decides to take over another> Then the rest of the world makes them give it back, just like we did when Iraq took Kuwait in 1991, or Germany took Belgium in 1914. This wouldn't even take a war, to accomplish. The wonderful thing about globalization, is that it gives the other nations in the world (if they act in a disciplined and united fashion) veto power over the acts of any one nation. For example: Let's say China occupies Taiwan. If this happens by force, then the rest of the world can non-violently non-cooperate. Stop buying all Chinese products. Stop allowing any technology transfers. Stop all capital inflows. Stop all raw material imports. Even a nation as big as China couldn't survive that for long. In the last 20 years, China's economy has become dependant on the rest of the world. Autonomy has been abandoned, by everyone who tried it (China, India, the Soviet Empire). This non-cooperation would soon cause the collapse of the Chinese economy, internal revolt, and a withdrawal from Taiwan. I've chosen the most difficult example. Obviously, this method would work even easier and faster with countries smaller than China. All it takes, to succeed, is discipline and unity in the civilized world. The recent historical examples of such sanctions applied against Iraq and South Africa, failed because they were so full of loopholes, and there were so many cheaters.
