<It just makes no sense. How do you teach someone a lesson by jumping into a trap? > It makes sense, if you accept their initial assumptions. They didn't expect it to become a trap. They thought the Iraqi people hated Saddam (correct), and would welcome American instruction on how to become a liberal secular democracy (way, way wrong). They thought, by now, Chalabi would be running Iraq for us, in full control of the pacified country, and our rested, triumphant army would be gearing up for the next Regime Change (Iran? Saudi Arabia?), to be timed for just before the election. They thought Abbas would wage a Palestinian civil war against Hamas, and Arafat would be made irrelevant. They thought the shamed French, Germans, and UN would be legitimizing and funding our adventures. They thought the Iraq adventure would be self-funding. GIGO.
