The Chalabi assumption on the part of the Neocons (that Iraqis would welcome Chalabi) seems like a reach even for them.

Come on that guy Chalabi is about as slimy as shoo goo. Yuck.

GIGO.

No argument

They thought the Iraqi people hated Saddam (correct), and would welcome American instruction on how to become a liberal secular democracy

...

They thought, by now, Chalabi would be running Iraq for us

...

They thought Abbas would wage a Palestinian civil war against Hamas, and Arafat would be made irrelevant.

They thought the shamed French, Germans, and UN would be legitimizing and funding our adventures. They thought the Iraq adventure would be self-funding.

Given that we're dealing with ideologues, I would submit that "believed" should be used instead of "thought" in the above. It was the lack of thought about which I railed from last fall through March. If given my limited understanding of the Arabic world, I could see a disaster with our troops becoming targets, little thought was required. An ideologue is blind to reality, but I hadn't considered Friedman an ideologue.

Be it from Iraq or the economy, the worse Bush's chances for reelection becomes, the more worried I become. This isn't a group that will willingly relinquish power. What diabolical scheme will Rove & Co. hatch?
