grace, if there were no social programs for the poor (many of whom have their background square in the ravages of slavery), you may well be dead instead of missing a car.

in that case, i'll bet you'd support the programs, right?

but we'll never know.

i agree there is a better solution than the current one. however, i don't believe your solution is better.

nor do i believe it is rational. a rational approach wouldn't "major in the minors." eg, a rational approach would start with "corporate welfare," which costs this country much more money than poverty reduction welfare.

what would you want to happen if you and your 9 month old kid were broke with no roof on your head, no education, abusive parents who mistreated you and distorted your world view... would you sit there and *understand* as your child starved to death... or froze to death...

would you be cool with that?

"I'm not saying people procreate with the idea that they'll get extra money back on their taxes, but I do know that people limit the number of children they have based on what they think they can afford to support."

The latter observation does not support (logically) your
previous statement.

Also, the "affordability" of support is a very stretchable
issue. I can't afford to support my two kids with full cost of
attendence at Princeton with a BMW. So what?

"I was mugged years ago by three kids from government subsidized housing"

I didn't mean individual crime, I meant a large-scale
riots or revolutions.

I think you are making one mistake: you blame everything
on parents and their past. You need to look forward and
recognize that realization of "dreams of poor children"
depends on current conditions and how their expectations
are set against available resources. Those miserable few
hundred bucks in child credit do not make much difference
with this regard.
