Mike

I have been discussing this elsewhere and these are my current thoughts. I think the chain-weighted dollars for GDP are inaccurate when you are thinking in terms of the debt servicing ability of the economy, job creation, profit potential etc… for the reasons described by Dr. R. I think it is better to look at the current dollars.

However, I think Dr. R. is wrong when he says those hedonic influenced numbers are wildly impacting the measurement of real GDP growth. The government itself is aware of the problem and is adjusting its own figures for it. They say as much. There is a table where they specifically outline the contribution of each part of REAL GDP Growth. The computers and peripheral portion contributes very little.

Mike,

If you are still a subscriber, you should send Dr R. a copy of that article so he can respond. If you do and he does, I would love to be able to read it. :-)
