If Cheney put it into a charitable trust, the idea is that he can get some tax savings plus income down the road, and that *eventually* the charity will get some money. If he is using this vehicle, then he did not give the share to charity; think of it more as pledging them to the charity, probably when he (and possibly his wife) dies.

He and his wife will probably reap the benefits for many years to come.
