Let's see: How about we take the graduating class of every law school, and replace our professional army with these guys. I am all for it. At least there would not have to be any mourning when there are casualties (I am kidding). Up til and including WWII, there was a tradition in this country that the sons of the upper class served in the armed forces along with the middle and the poor. They were often the officers or the pilots of Air Force and Navy planes but they served nonetheless. After all, this is their country as well. That tradition continued into the Korean War as well but began to die off. Now its rare that the upper classes serve at war time at all esp. with a volunteer army. With this war, not only are they are not serving but they are not paying either. Why should they have their cake and eat it too? The rich were given a discount when the gov't is short of funds. Please tell me the logic in that one! The US government has been "short of funds" most of the last 60 years. As far as the "discount", is your assumption that it all belongs to government, and when you get to keep more, you are getting a discount? In the last 6 years prior to 2000, the budget deficit was a thing of the past. We are short of funds again because of poor fiscal planning. I am amazed that I having this discussion with a conservative. What is happening to the GOP in this country? In this sense, the rich by income (excluding Ariana Huffington and Kennedys), have the lowest discount, others have a discount of 100%, meaning some are not paying any income taxes. Tell me logic in giving some a free pass when the government is short of funds. The logic.....they barely have enough food to eat and pay rent. How can they afford to pay taxes when they can not afford to eat? ted
