My personal view fwiw is that most of the doom and gloom out there comes from the job climate which is terrible, worse than any other time in my life. The lack of US post recession hiring is causing the recovery to lag like a bird trying to fly in molasses.

Lizzie, unless you're younger than 30 years old, there have been at least four periods during your life when the job climate was worse. And in the last recession, '91, job recovery lagged, too. The above link lets you customize charts for various periods going back to 1970 and to overlay recessions, among other things.

Cheer up! If past is prologue, there should be a strong jobs recovery in the not too distant future. Of course, in the past, employers didn't have so many economic disincentives to hiring (unemployment, taxes, workers comp, employment litigation, etc.), or offshore options of which you speak, or the worker productivity that we enjoy now via technology. fwiw
