<I have no idea what you mean by "usually a prelude to calls for 'managing' or 'guiding' news." >

The Jessica Lynch story is a textbook example of managed news, carefully crafted and edited. The military tries very, very hard, to get good press. This story is a Myth-in-the-making, a glorious and instructive tale of heroism and sacrifice. But it's largely a story about how America imagines itself to be, how we like to see ourselves, not what really happened. And it took a lot of skilled managing, to do it. If you don't see it, that's because you've swallowed the Myth. Hook, line, and sinker.
