lurqer, Western media made it sound so horrible<g> and so political

Actually, the so-called "boss approval" of marriage in China has little to do with the boss per se. The person who wants to marry only need to go to their personal dept., and ask for a letter on a piece of paper with a letter head of the working unit and a seal. Anyone who works in the personal Dept., including the clerk, has the right to give out the letter without special approval of the boss, or even the head of personal dept.. As a matter of fact, the Boss would never even know who is marrying until the married couple bring some candies to their office mates (a Chinese custom called Eating Happy Candy). And except during a couple of years when political movement was at its heat (abnormal period), like the Cultural Revolution, all the couples who wanted to marry had NO trouble whatsoever to obtain the letter. And it is the same thing with divorce, for which the involved couples also needs a letter from their working units. Just looking at the rapid increase of the number of the divorced, you can tell how easy to obtain this type of letter.

This is just one more example of the exaggeration of the Western media.
