Since some health issues surfaced a few years ago...I have looked at life and particularly my own with different eyes. For most of my life, I was fixated on mission accomplishment first and survival second. With the first always first. I continue to have that general perspective, but now I set my own missions. The difference is they are not usually directly combat related. Two weeks ago, at a major Montagnard reunion, I donated my old personal fighting knives, Some 10 Montagnard (Yard) recon unit uniform patches, two Montagnard fighting crossbows with quivers, about 2 dozen arrows, a Hmong tribal silk embroidered tapestry depicting villagers escaping a communist attack, a Montagnard bracelet, a Montagnard necklace, an elaborate handcarved Montagnard pipe and several other items to the (soon to be built) Montagnard cultural center and museum in North Carolina. Having shared battlefields with Yards in the 60s, and having participated since 1986 in the liberation of the 4,000 Yards currently in the US, and realizing they all came here without baggage and empty-handed...I was very pleased that I had kept these items. Today I received a huge reward. Unrelated in fact to the donation perhaps...but in my mind, a relationship was there and it restarted my collection. An old friend and I went to Ft Bragg this morning to receive our Yarborough Knives. Mine is serial number 0393. This magnificent blade was selected last year, over every other fighting knife in the world, to be the new Green Beret issue fighting knife. It is now issued to all SF Q Course graduates. Retired SFers may also get one. Sam and I had to sign to agree not to sell it, nor to give it away. The vetting process, prior to issue, was extensive, certain, and went to the highest levels of SF command. We had to sign 4 different documents at various steps of the vetting process, and I am well known and an officer in the org. This is no ordinary knife. This is not another special fighting knife. This blade with special sheath is perfection for its intended uses. I have carried and used three types of blades...This one is different and has the best features of each of the others. The wonderful ciso, ka-bar and randall knives have instantaneously been out-classed. Now I have to decide whether to frame it...or use it as a field knife while fishing and hunting. My instincts tell me to preserve it because it is perfection and will no doubt be of far greater value later. My experience tells me to use and enjoy it. We have always had only one rule in our home. Everything is usable...Nothing is for show alone. I see no reason to change that. uw
