Jacob, in general, what you are saying (in your two posts) is common sense and true. However, as only too well illustrated by WTC, our enemies have no qualms about coming after us in here our country.

To the best of my knowledge, the war by USSR against Afghanistan was imperialistic. On the other hand, our war against the resurgence of aggressive extremist Islamists is defensive (and, imo, Iraq was a target of opportunity in that larger war). All we really want is to be left alone -- and to go on living our lives in our habitual utter decadence, with State being in blissful (even if somewhat schizophrenic) separation form Church.

I think there is an evolving understanding that if we fail to be proactive in our response to the challenge, all that will happen is that we will be challenged again and again. In this sense, it is merely a matter of time until we will be forced to recognize that we actually are in your "fight for survival" category.

One more thing... In the conflict between Israelis and the Arabs, the opinions about who intends to "cleanse" whom differ sharply, to say the very least...
