can that person target you if he knows your IP address?

Yes...and if he's good enough and wants to make the effort and take the risk, you are toast

"Forgive me if this is an elementary question. Still trying to learn more about all this stuff"

can't let this go by without a comment or two....

i don't think you were speaking to me *personally*, and probably not even *literally* when you said forgive me, but for the record

i have never been troubled by nor put off by or in any way felt someone needed to apologize for asking ANY question here. maybe if someone simply rolls in and refuses to do any research and just wants people to drop what they are doing and provide them with answers... maybe that behavior might require an apology <g>

but let's not ever forget why this thread was started over 5 years ago by Junkyardawg....

"This is a board for all of us to learn how to use our Personal Computers. I have learned a lot of what I know by simply asking others on SI how to do things. Such as how to copy and paste, how to research things and so on. If you have a question on how to operate simply post your question and we will try to answer your questions." - Lamar (Junkyardawg), Thread Originator, Aug 4, 1998 9:31 PM"

so forgiveness, imo, is not an issue on cl thread.

as for "Still trying to learn more about all this stuff"...

aren't we all, aren't we all.

oh yeah, you asked a question too.

"If you visit a website that is monitored by an unscrupulous marketer, can that person target you if he knows your IP address? If someone knows your IP address, can they target your machine in some nefarious way?"

here's a good pcmag article for you. i'll paste it in the next post so we have a thread record, as it might go too long here.
